Goldie’s Wood Fern along with Male Fern are Michigan’s largest wood ferns.
Goldie’s Wood Fern has large scales at the base of the stem, leaflets that have shallow teeth and sori in two rows on the underside of the leaflets. The tips of the fronds tend to taper quickly in this species. When the fronds are young, they edges of the fronds tend to be yellow-green.
Goldie’s Fern is native in the southern part of the state, missing in the middle and then native again in the northern part of the lower peninsula and in the upper peninsula.
This fern, like most, wants moist conditions and shade or dappled light. There should also be lots of organic material in the soil and protection from the wind.
