Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron)

Ebony Spleenwort is a small, evergreen fern that grows to about 18 inches tall. Its fronds are rather narrow and taper to a point. The leaflets are similar in shape to the leaflets of Christmas fern, tapering to a point with a pointy lobe near the stem. The leaflets are usually alternate, rather than opposite. The stem is smooth and dark-colored.

This fern is found mostly in the lower half of the lower peninsula and some counties in northern parts close to Lake Michigan.

When the fronds are mature, the spore bearing packets (sori) are formed in two lines along the underside of the leaflet. These are diagonal to the main vein of the leaflets. Once mature, the spores are released.

Most spleenworts grow out of rocks. This one is an exception, growing in open forests and in old fields. It may be especially suited to woodland plant gardening.
