Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa)
Black Cohosh is in the same genus as the baneberries . A study of the leaves makes this apparent, but while white baneberry and red baneberry have compact racemes, black cohosh has tall ones and the plant can reach five feet tall.
While black cohosh is not native to Michigan, it occurs south and east of us. If you desire only Michigan native plants in your garden, skip this plant. If you choose to add this to your garden, take care not to plant near a sensitive woodland, as it has escaped cultivation in one county in Michigan.
